Kahler Named SLC Student-Athlete of the Year Lamar punter recognized for success on the field, in the classroom
FRISCO, Texas – Senior punter Kollin Kahler has been named Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year announced league officials Tuesday morning. It is the first time a Lamar football player has received the honor.
"I'm very honored to be receiving this award," said Kahler. "It is very rewarding to see hard work pay off. I truly love Lamar, and everyone here has been so selfless in helping me become a better student-athlete, from the professors, coaches and the whole administration. Everyone has done such a great job. This honor isn't just for me, but for all the behind-the-scenes folks who have helped me achieve my goals."
Kahler became the school's first player to receive first-team preseason All-Southland honors since Lamar resurrected the program, and he lived up to the hype this season. He garnered first-team all-conference honors after posting 41.3 yards per punt average, and finished the year as the school's all-time leader in yards per punt. He also recorded 12 punts over 50 yards, while downing 19 inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
A 2013 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, Kahler has maintained 3.9 grade Kahler was named a recipient of the 2013 David J. Beck Fellowship. Awarded to only two Lamar students each year, the fellowship rewards outstanding academic achievement and allows top students to further challenge themselves with unique opportunities for undergraduate research and creative study. Kahler plans to use the fellowship to study the advances of joint replacement surgery in Dublin, Ireland over the summer.
"Kollin is very deserving of this award," said Lamar head football coach Ray Woodard. "He has done such a great job both on the field and in the classroom. He is a young man that all Lamar fans can be very proud of. From the moment we brought back football he has been our starting punter. What a great way to cap his career at Lamar."
A two-time Academic All-Southland Conference selection, Kahler has also been named to the FCS ADA Academic All-Star team during his career. Earlier this season, Kahler was a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy, which is considered the academic Heisman.
