Beaumont Police say a dispute between two men, possibly ongoing well beyond Monday left 20-year-old Emanuel Burleigh dead.
Crime scene tape surrounded the city's first homicide scene of the year in the 5600 block of Lancaster.
But was it murder?
Officers say Burleigh and the shooter got into an argument earlier Monday evening.
Around 8 p.m. Monday, police say Burleigh went to the home on Lancaster to confront the suspect again. Neighbors say that's where the suspect lives.
Another argument turned physical, the suspect pulled a gun and fired at least one shot according to police.
After declining an interview, a neighbor told 12News Burleigh showed up at the home with a baseball bat and started beating on a vehicle.
The shooter's mother told that neighbor that the shot was a warning to Burleigh and it only hit him by accident.
Police have not confirmed these details.
Paramedics determined Burleigh had died at the scene from an upper body gunshot wound by the time police arrived.
The case remains with detectives.
Once completed they will send it to the District Attorney's office for review.
