Beaumont approves permit to open sports bar near two schools

Posted: Updated:

A new Beaumont nightspot is in the works, and its proposed location is a little too close for comfort for some.

The Beaumont city council Tuesday unanimously approved granting a permit to a Beaumont businessman wanting to open a sports bar in the 11th St. Plaza, which is within 1,000 feet of both Premier High School and Central Medical Magnet High School.
Some parents with kids at Central are less than thrilled with the idea.
"I don't want [the bar] there," said Yolanda Ceasar. "These days [kids] can leave school, go over there and hang out... skip school."

"It doesn't really bother me... as long as [the bar owner] has the proper security measures to keep the students from going there," said Jamie Robinson, whose daughter is a freshman at Central. "If it's not open during school hours, I don't have a problem with it."

The only stipulation in the permit granted by the city council is that the bar's off-street parking must be reconfigured and re-striped to meet city requirements.

Beaumont city ordinances state that a business cannot sell alcohol within 300 feet of campuses, and for those wanting to do so within 1,000 feet, an ordinance states that "shall be unlawful... if the city receives a request from the governing body of the private school or from the board of trustees of the school district..."

As of Tuesday the city has received no such requests, so for now, the sports bar has been cleared for take-off.

We contacted both the Beaumont Independent School District and Premier High School to see if either has an issue with a bar being close to their campuses. We are awaiting a response.
