Olivia Coat's family considers legal action against doctor

Posted: Updated:

Family members of "Baby Olivia" are awaiting autopsy results before deciding if  they will seek legal action against the doctor who delivered her.  They say they will not seek action against The Medical Center of Southeast Texas where the baby was born.

Olivia Marie Coats died on Jan. 1, five days after she was born in a forceps-assisted delivery by Dr. George Backardjiev, who operates a clinic on Saba Ln. in Port Neches.

Olivia's family said the baby suffered a fractured skull and a severed spine during the delivery. The infant was eventually removed from life support at Memorial Herman in Houston.

Dr. Backardjiev was back at work and seeing patients Monday, but he declined to comment.

On Saturday Olivia's parents, Allen Coats and Rachel Melancon, held a funeral service to celebrate Olivia's life, including a balloon release in her honor.

The family took to social media, launching a Facebook campaign, tweeting and urging people to sign a petition to pass what they call Olivia's Law, banning the use of forceps during delivery.

As of Monday night, the Facebook page reached nearly 100,000 likes and 24 hours after the petition was made, it reached over 35,000 signatures.
