Churches unite to help grieving students

Posted: Updated:

The Kountze High School counseling team will meet during a teacher work day Monday. They will be preparing for Tuesday when students will return from break, many of them mourning two students killed in a fatal accident.

Keiron Edwards, 18, and Savion Smith, 16, died in a car wreck Late Friday night. The two were passengers in a Kia that collided with a Chevy SUV between Kountze and Lumberton on Hooks Cemetery Road, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety.

Kountze churches and their congregations gathered Sunday at Greater Mount Corinth Missionary Baptist Church.

Pastor Roger Shillow said he wanted students to know that they were not alone during the grieving process.

"It's important we don't try to shield our kids from pain. I think, more importantly, teach them how to handle it," Pastor Shillow said.

Students have tied ribbons around Kountze High School in memory of Smith and Edwards. A vigil for the two is being planned for Monday at the high school.
