New year brings new tax on mixed drinks

Posted: Updated:

Starting January 1, 2014 you may be paying a little extra at the bar. A new liquor tax bill will go into effect that was passed during the regular legislative session.

The bill will lower the tax restaurants pay on liquor sales from 14 percent to 6.7 percent.

Mixed drinks which are now tax free will be taxed 8.25 percent.

There's already an 8.25 percent tax on beer and wine. The tax change is expected to raise $21 million for Texas in 2014.

Businesses have a choice whether to follow the new law, or continue business as it was before.

According to taxfoundation.org even with the new tax Texas will remain among the states that have the cheapest tax rates on alcohol.
