New year brings new tax on mixed drinks

Mixed drinks with a lime will be more expensive in 2014.

A new state tax on mixed drinks will be added to your bill come the first of the year.

The new tax bill was passed during the regular legislative session to decrease the tax restaurants pay on liquor sales to 6 point 7 percent from 14 percent.

Mixed drinks which are now tax free will be taxed 8.25%.

Consumers already pay an 8.25% tax on beer and wine.

The tax change is expected to generate $21,000,000 for Texas in 2014.
