Nederland police investigate incident which burned a man from his face to his knees

Posted: Updated:

Nederland police are investigating an incident that burned a 29-year-old man from his face to his knees.

Sergeant David Odom says the man suffered burns to about three-fourths of his body, front and back.

Sergeant Odom says the man and two others were working on a truck in the 3000 block of Avenue G, when gasoline got on the man.

Odom says it appears a nearby scent candle that was in the bed of the pickup truck ignited the gasoline and burned the man.

He was taken by ambulance to Winnie, from there a helicopter took him to UTMB.

Sergeant Odom says he was conscious and alert.

The incident is still under investigation and witnesses are being interviewed, but Sergeant Odom says at this time it appears to have been an accident.
