Port Neches girl donates presents, raises money for boy with brain cancer

PORT NECHES -

At just eight years old, Amirah Rice seems wise beyond her years.

Amirah, a third grader at Ridgewood Elementary School in Port Neches, doesn't ask for a lot of presents for Christmas. In fact, she asks her parents to spend money they would normally spend on her to buy gifts for the less fortunate.

"Because I already have a lot of good things, like a nice bed to get in and stuff, and then they need stuff too," Amirah told 12News Friday.

She's been doing this for the past three years. This Christmas, she decided to give presents to a second grade student at Booker T. Washington Elementary who was diagnosed with brain cancer earlier this year.

Amirah gave 8-year-old DeSshawn Harmonson a bag full of toys and games on Christmas Eve.

"I felt really good inside because I felt like I was helping another person in need," she said.

That's not all she did. Amirah also helped raise money to help DeShawn's family pay their hotel costs while he undergoes treatment in Houston.

A lot of money.

"Altogether at our school we raised [more than] $1,800," Amirah said.

"She's an exceptional child," said Amirah's father Jason.

Amirah still gets a couple presents each year from her parents and Santa Claus, and while there aren't as many under her tree as some other kids'...

"I don't care if I don't get a lot of presents, I'm just thankful for what I get," she said.

She says she wants to continue her tradition of 'playing Santa' for as long she lives.
