Man dies after shooting self with flare gun

CHAMBERS COUNTY - A man is dead after he shot himself with a flare gun.

Emergency crews responded to the 200 block of Oaks Grande Drive in the Baytown area late Wednesday night for a man who had an open chest wound.

The Chambers County Sheriff's Office says 52-year-old John David Cook, Jr. was working with a 37 MM flare gun on his back patio when the gun fired.

Cook's wife told police she had gone to bed and woke up to her husband screaming in the living room.

Cook suffered severe injuries to his hands and chest. He was transported by LifeFlight to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston where he later died.

Authorities said during their investigation, they found the flare casing in the grass near the porch and other items, including "A-Bomb" fireworks, Black Cat firecrackers and a plate with gunpowder were located in the kitchen.

Officials do not believe alcohol was a factor in the accident.
