Busted sewer line causes Christmas headaches for Port Arthur neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

Landlord Darryl Craus says a pool of sewage has been seeping through the floor of his tenant's Port Arthur home for some time now.

"Probably been there since December 13th or 14th," Craus told 12News Thursday.

He says a backed up sewer line is to blame. A few houses down, tape marks off a hole dug around a pipe Craus says is the root of the problem.

"If you're going to dig a pipe out and see it's broke, then fix it," Craus said. "There's been no one out here."

Craus says his tenant, living at a home at the corner of 12th Street and 6th Ave, had planned to have family over Christmas day, but had to cancel everything.

"Were you able to use your toilet Christmas day? Because she wasn't. Were you able to use it for the last 12 days? She wasn't."

Neighbor Demetra Williams says she's had problems with her sewage, too.

"Every time it rains... everybody on the block's sewer, backs up this way, and we can't flush our toilets," Williams said.

Concerned for his tenant, Craus wants answers. He says after bringing the issue to the attention of the city, a supervisor with the waste water department came out last week to have a look.

"He said 'This is an emergency... I assure you it will be fixed, tomorrow at the latest', and this was Friday evening," Craus said. "As a manager of a department, you know you would think that you'd stay on top of a main sewage line to houses... it's a health hazard, this has to be fixed."

Port Arthur City Manager Floyd Johnson tells us that the city has not been ignoring the situation, and that workers are scheduled to be out there Friday morning to work on the line.
