After more than three hours, a natural gas leak in Beaumont's Avenues neighborhood was stopped.

The gas leak which was described as "significant" Thursday afternoon prompted the Beaumont Fire Department to close a number of streets in the 3800 block of Avenue B.

Captain Brad Pennison says motorists were encouraged to avoid the area in the south side of Beaumont. No evacuations were ordered.

Centerpoint Energy is working to repair the line.

Captain Earl White says it appears workers from Centerpoint accidentally caused the leak while digging to replace the gas line.

It started around 5:30 p.m. and was shut off at around 8:45 p.m.
