Local firefighters make the most of working Christmas

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters at Beaumont Fire Department Number One found a way to celebrate the holiday even though they were on duty.

The team held a Christmas potluck feast complete with turkey, ham and all the sides.

Driver Justin Guynes said working the holiday has some advantages.

"Its a fulfillment you get to know that you're here protecting the city and all of the people who do get to spend time with family and be off," Guynes said.

Deputy Chief Calvin Carrier said they consider each other family. He said some of the older firefighters look out for their younger colleagues who have little ones at home, letting them have the morning off

"You miss your family but as you get older like I am, you don't have the little kids at home," Carrier said.

Carrier also said he's worked about ten Christmases in his time at BFD and has usually responded to a fire call by Christmas morning.

"We've been blessed with a quiet day," he said. "If it's quiet for us that means it's a good day for the rest of the community."

Peace and special treats made for a happy Christmas, even for those who didn't have the day off.
