Jack Brooks Regional Airport sees huge increase in travelers

Jefferson County gets an early Christmas gift by way of the Jack Brooks Regional Airport.

For the first time since air service took off in February of this year, there won't be any need to dip into the $1.5 million revenue guarantee.

That money was collected by private and public entities in southeast Texas to attract American Airlines service between here and the Dallas-Fort Worth airport.

That means more travelers are using the airport.

According to the airport manager, ridership has seen a 33% increase since February.

Because of free parking, the 31,000 local people who have flown out of Brooks airport have saved more than $1 million in parking fees.

Also this year, more passengers have traveled out of the airport than the previous three years combined. Since the airport has more than 10,000 departing passengers, it is eligible for $1 million in FAA grant funding.
