First student graduates from Evolution Academy

Posted: Updated:

The first and only student so far graduated from Evolution Academy in Beaumont.

Guadalupe Juarez, 20, said she never thought she would earn her high school diploma. However, after only two months of being enrolled, she did.

Juarez said she dropped out of Memorial High School in 2011, after she lost her father and discovered she was pregnant with her son.

She also said she is the first person in her family to graduate high school.

"I finally made it and I never thought this was going to happen," Juarez said, "but we did it."

Principal of Evolution Academy, Dr. Veronica Durden, said Juarez worked extremely hard to accomplish her goal.

"Her mom is super proud of her, she's proud and I know that her son, although he's young now, would appreciate the effort she took to get her diploma," Durden said.

Evolution Academy is a charter high school that opened 12 weeks ago. The school offers flexible four hour scheduling for students grades 9-12 and is currently enrolling.
