Houston man arrested for Evadale terroristic threat

Posted: Updated:

Authorities have identified a man arrested in connection with a threat made against campuses in the Evadale school district.

James Reagan Butuad, 32, has been charged with one count of terroristic threat and one count of impaired public and/or government service.

Winter vacation began early for Evadale Independent School District students due to the terroristic threat that was called in to the Jasper County sheriff's office Wednesday night.

Evadale Superintendent Gary Fairchild was the first to tell 12News that an arrest in Harris County was made in connection to the threats.

"The security and safety of our staff and students is paramount at Evadale," he said. "Even putting one kid or one staff member at risk, we're just not going to do it."

Fairchild did not specify what those threats actually were, but said it was not a bomb threat or a hit list and that the suspect was not a student.

Parents said Wednesday night they received a call that administrators were canceling school Thursday.

Evadale seventh grader Jeff Ruth said he was not happy about school being canceled Thursday, of all days.

"We're supposed to have waffles and pancakes today but we're not since it got canceled," Ruth said, "so I'm pretty mad."

The suspect was arrested at his home in Houston for a third-degree felony charge of making a terroristic threat.

Students at nearby Warren ISD were released at 10 a.m.  because of the threat at Evadale.
