Man arrested in connection to terroristic threat at Evadale ISD

Posted: Updated:

The superintendent of the Evadale Independent School District, Gary Fairchild, tells 12News that a man has been arrested in connection to a terroristic threat that canceled all classes at district schools Thursday.

Fairchild said the man was arrested in Harris County, noting that the threat was made against the district.  He said it was not a bomb threat nor a hit list but would not release further details about the nature of the threat.

Fairchild said he and Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman would release more information soon.

Parents were notified through automated phone calls.

Fairchild said he learned about the threat about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

A spokesperson with the Tyler County Sheriff's Office spokesperson told 12News that schools in nearby Warren ISD were also closed early Thursday because of the same threat. They say the Warren threat was minimal, but authorities were being cautious by letting students release early.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting in the investigation.

A spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Investigation told 12News the FBI cannot comment on the alleged threat.
