Groves family hopes to stay strong during holidays after heartbreaking loss

GROVES -

Inside Denise Caples' home in Groves, the tree is decorated and ready for Christmas morning, but Denise is not ready.

"Part of me is looking forward to it, and part of me is dreading it, because I hurt for my kids," Denise told 12News Wednesday.

This year will mark the first Christmas Denise's son and daughter will spend without their father.

David Caples passed away at a Houston hospital December 9, after a long battle with Hepatitis C he had contracted after getting a tattoo. He was 45 years old.

"To know David is to love him, because he had such a big heart," said Denise.

As if the pain of losing a husband and a father wasn't hard enough, Denise says the day before he passed their home in Houston was burglarized.

"Everything was ransacked, it looked like a tornado... then the next day my husband died."

Denise says the burglar stole, among other things, laptop computers filled with family photos she'll never get back, and a sentimental wallet that her husband had passed on to their son.

"My heart fell to the pit of my stomach... because my kids have hurt enough, my kids have lost enough."

Now at a new home in Groves, Denise refuses to play the victim. After all her pain and suffering, she wants to use money she earns by selling her homemade soap to help other families suffering through tragedy.

"Something good has to come of this," said Denise. "I have to lead my kids by example. They're going to learn how to view life based on how I show them to look at life... they're my responsibility, I'm all they've got."

If you would like to help the Caples family in any way, you can contact her via the "David Caples benefit fund" page on Facebook.
