UPDATE: Police make arrest in north-end shooting

A Beaumont Police Department spokesperson told 12News that charges have been filed in an early-morning shooting.

Around 5 a.m. Monday, officers were called to the 800 block of Peach Avenue in reference to a victim of a shooting. The victim, a male, 29, was shot in the abdomen. He was taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth.

The victim and witnesses identified the shooter as Derrick Gerard Matherson, 25, of Beaumont.

Officers spoke with a woman who said Matherson is her ex-husband and the victim is her new boyfriend. She said when she and the victim arrived at her house on Peach; Derrick showed up in a white Dodge and started shooting the car. He fled the area before officers arrived.

The victim was taken to surgery and is expected to survive the injury.

Officers found Matherson in the 1800 block of Glasshouse. He was questioned, charged, and then taken to the Jefferson County Jail. He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
