Mysterious "Secret Santa" paying grocery bills for unsuspecting customers

Posted: Updated:

Shoppers at two area Market Basket stores were surprised to learn they didn't have to pay for their groceries, thanks to a Secret Santa.

The manager of the Market Basket in Port Neches, Randy Becker, tells 12News a man approached him Tuesday wanting to buy groceries for ten random shoppers.

The only catch was that the good Samaritan wanted to remain anonymous.

After taking care of ten customers, the bill was about $500, but the man wanted to spend up to $1,000, so he helped about ten more shoppers that day.

Then the next day, the same man did the same act of kindness at the Market Basket on 11th Street in Beaumont.

Teacher Melissa Ware, who is one of the customers whose groceries were paid for by the Secret Santa, said, "It was amazing.  I almost started crying, it touched my heart, just the kindness of a stranger, it really reminded me what Christmas is all about."

All we know about the man is that, according to the manager of the Port Neches Market Basket, he and his wife own a business.  They had a good year, and want to share their blessings.

He might not be through.

"You never know when someone's going to pick up the bill.," Becker said.
