State representative struggles to get into congressional race

Texas House of Representatives member James White is expressing frustration at not being able to file for a newly-opened US House seat.

It's another 12News political exclusive.

The Hillister Republican says obviously he'd like to be able to run for the post, opened when Congressman Steve Stockman announced he would run for US Senate.

But White is blocked by an interpretation of the election code that says he can't since he had already filed for re-election to his own seat.

White told us he's excited about retaining his District 19 seat in Austin, but blamed Stockman for an intentionally late announcement.

At least seven Republicans have now filed in the race.

The deadline has been extended through next Monday for would-be candidates who have not already filed for re-election.
