Former Nederland ISD trustee is running for the District 21 state representative seat

Posted: Updated:

Former Nederland ISD trustee Gavin Bruney becomes the first, and so far the only, Democratic candidate to announce for the District 21 state representative seat.

It's being vacated by the retiring Allan Ritter, a former Democrat who switched to the Republican Party.

Bruney is 55-year-old Lake Charles native who's been in Nederland for 28 years.

He's a certified registered nurs anesthetist.

As Nederland ISD trustee, Bruney was chairman of the capital improvement committee, which made proposals leading to the eventual passage of $28 million in bonds that he says will result in significant energy cost savings at each of the seven district schools.

While Nederland is the only Democrat who has filed for the March 2014 primary, on the Republican side, there are two candidates battling for the nomination.

They are real estate developer Dade Phelan and businesswoman and former Papa John's franchise owner Judy Nichols.
