Christmas comes early for abused children

BEAUMONT -

Close to 60 abused and neglected children are playing with brand new toys and gifts after being treated to a special Christmas party Saturday by those who care for them at Buckner Children's Village.

Saturday marked the 23rd annual Buckner Toy Run.

Barely able to contain their excitement over the sight of Mr. and Mrs. Claus, the special group of kids got their chance to sit in Santa's lap and reap their reward.

"You get excited about being able to see the kids light up and have a really great memory," said Buckner administrator Laura May. "It's one of those days where the kids get to forget about any problems or issues that they have and they get to just have fun and be a kid."

Toddlers and teens alike ripped through wrapping paper to unveil their impressive new toys: scooters, Legos, bicycles, even a Nintendo DS.

"Christmas is a time of giving, and we just want to give back to the people that are less fortunate than us," said Mary Young with Christian Motorcyclists Association, the group that donated all the gifts.

Before the kids got their presents they were treated to an incredible display of basketball skills by Tanya Crevier with The Winning Edge.

"Just to give these kids some inspiration and let them know that maybe they can do something special like this, and that they have gifts and talents inside of them just waiting to be developed," said Crevier.
