HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police say a homeless man opened fire on a group of burglary suspects in northeast Harris County overnight.
It happened just before 1am on Aldine Bender near Aldine Westfield.
Authorities say the homeless man was sleeping under a carport when he heard glass breaking and saw three men trying to break into a nearby trailer. When the suspects saw the man, they took off, but investigators say they dropped one of their guns in the process.
Police say a gun fight broke out when the homeless man picked up the firearm. One of the suspects was killed.
"We are currently investigating the offense. We are talking to the person who lives on the property and trying find out exactly what happened and to see if we have a good description on the other two suspects," said Sgt. Ben Bell with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
According to deputies, the homeless man who lives on the property watches the businesses for the owner in exchange for a place to stay. Deputies have confirmed multiple weapons have been recovered at the scene.
Officers are still looking for the two other suspects.
