DPS says fog is a factor in major accident on Highway 90 between China and Nome

A spokesperson with the Department of Public Safety said a major accident involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle on Highway 90 (between China and Nome) is weather related.

The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Trooper Stephanie Davis told 12News the 18-wheeler was stopped in the crossover between east and westbound traffic lanes on Highway 90. The driver, identified as Rolando Escamilla, 56, of Clute, Texas, waited for westbound traffic to clear. As he attempted to cross the westbound lanes of Highway 90, a 2008 Dodge Charger struck his truck in the trailer.

The driver of the Dodge, Sarah Fontenot, 17, of China, and her passenger, 15, were both taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont with what are described as minor injuries.

Escamilla was not injured.

Trooper Davis said due to extreme fog, Sarah Fontenot was issued a citation for driving without headlights when required.
