A search for a robbery suspect in Groves sparked a brief lockdown of an elementary school campus around noon on Tuesday.
Port Neches-Groves superintendent Dr. Rodney Cavness told 12News that Taft Elementary was locked down briefly as a precaution as officers searched for the suspect.
According to a spokesperson for the Groves Police Department, a man got out of a car, reached inside an unlocked car at the Super Stop located at 6900 32nd Street in Groves in an attempt to take a woman's purse. The victim screamed and a witness confronted the man. The suspect ran and the witness chased after him. While attempting to retrieve the purse the suspect assaulted the witness.
The suspect was able to get away and police began searching the area.
The robbery suspect was spotted by police in the 2800 block of Maple. After a short foot chase, he was arrested.
During the investigation officers determined that the car used by the suspect was stolen earlier in the morning from a business in Port Arthur.
