Edwards duo leads LU over Milwaukee Lamar records 599th win in program history
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Dominique Edwards notched her fourth double-double of the season to lead the Lamar Lady Cardinals to a 75-63 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee on the first day of the Aggie Hotel Encanto Thanksgiving Classic on Friday.
Edwards tied a career high with 24 points and added 15 rebounds to lead Lamar (4-3) to its 599th victory in program history. JaMeisha Edwards added a career-high 17 points for the Lady Cardinals, while Gia Ayers added 15 points.
"We're getting consistent scoring from there players," Lamar coach Robin Harmony said. "That's key. They can't just focus on one player."
The Lady Cardinals trailed by seven points midway through the first half, and trailed 32-30 with 4:17 remaining in the opening period before going on a 9-0 run to take the lead for good. Lamar took a 39-35 lead into intermission and opened the second half on an 8-2 run to take control for good.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1-4) stayed in the game in the first half by shooting 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from 3-point range before Lamar adjusted its defense in the second half, holding the Panthers to 12.5 percent shooting (2-of-16) from behind the arc over the final 20 minutes.
The Lady Cardinals did a good job of holding onto the ball, committing a season-low 10 turnovers. After averaging 22 turnovers per game over the first five contests, the Lady Cardinals have committed just 21 turnovers over the last two games.
Ashley Green had a double-double for Milwaukee, finishing with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Angela Rodriguez also had 18 points for the Panthers, while Kimee Chandler added 10 points.
Kensha'dra Smith had nine points, all in the first half for Lamar. Dominique Edwards had her double-double before the break, piling up 13 points and 12 rebounds in the first half.
Lamar goes for the 600th win in program history when it faces Northern Illinois at noon Saturday on the final day of the two-day event. The Huskies (2-3) dropped a 77-73 decision to host New Mexico State earlier Friday.
Following Saturday's game, Lamar takes a break for final exams before traveling to Missouri State for a Dec. 15 contest. The next home game is 6 p.m. Dec. 18 against Texas State.
