Stores prepare for Black Friday crowds

Posted: Updated:

Black Friday is almost here. Well, more like Black Thursday, since most stores at Parkdale Mall in Beaumont will open at 8pm Thanksgiving.

At J.C. Penney inside the mall, employees are getting ready for the crowds.

"We start a couple months out, planning, thinking about it," said store leader Nancy Avery. "There will be a mass of people in here, hopefully you won't be able to see this aisle."

To make it easier for shoppers to get around, this year J.C. Penney doubled the width of its center aisle from 7 feet to 14 feet.

"Part of Black Friday is not only just coming here and shopping and seeing our deals, but people love to find their friends... and they stand in the middle aisle and visit, and we love that too," said Avery.

Avery said about 20 employees will be walking around the store carrying mobile check-out machines, that they can use to swipe customers' debit or credit cards to help avoid long lines at the registers.

According to the National Retail Federation, about 140 million people are expected to shop Thanksgiving weekend.
