Father takes action to save family from fire

HARDIN COUNTY -

Two of eight injured in a mobile home fire in Hardin County will undergo surgery Monday morning according to family members.

The fire started sometime after 6 a.m. Sunday morning at a home in the 2800 block of Fire Tower road.

A family of nine lived in the home. A husband and wife, their two daughters, a son-in-law and four grandchildren.

The sheriff's office says those injured ranged from one year old to 45 years old. Injuries ranged from smoke inhalation to serious burns.

A neighbor told 12News that the eldest man of the home acted courageously getting five of his family members out on his own.

A family member spoke with 12News explaining the loss the family is dealing with.

"Those babies lost everything. No toys, no clothes. The adults have nothing. It's hard for children to understand well where's my baby doll, where's my game or where's my blanket. They lost it all," Annita Leatherwood said.

Leatherwood's brother was one of the nine living inside the home. It was his father-in-law who kicked a door, crawled under smoke, and broke a window to save five of his family members. The other three escaped on their own according to a neighbor.

Leatherwood says four people remains in the hospital. A woman in her 20's and her one-year-old son are in critical condition.

She says they suffered severe burns to 80 percent of their bodies and will have surgery Monday.

A six-year-old girl is in critical condition and is in a drug induced coma with burns covering the top half of her body.

And a one-year-old girl suffered smoke inhalation but may be released Monday morning.

They are at Shriner's burn center in Galveston.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
