Cards fall to Grand Canyon

Posted: Updated:

SALT LAKE CITY – Rhon Mitchell and Amos Wilson combined for 37 points on Saturday afternoon in the final day of the Global Sports Showcase, but it wasn't enough for the Lamar men's basketball team as the Cardinals fell 78-69 to Grand Canyon at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on the campus of the University of Utah.

Mitchell, who registered a season-high on Friday night against Utah, bettered it with 22 points on 9-for-17 shooting from the field, and Wilson put up 15 points, making seven of 15 attempts.

Nimrod Hilliard also scored in double figures for the sixth straight game, finishing with 11 to go along with five assists and three steals. Octavius Green scored nine and pulled down a team-best 11 rebounds.

For the game, the Cards (1-5) were outshot 42.1 percent to 39.4, but the real damage was done from beyond the arc as the Antelopes (3-3) connected on 10 of 21 three-point attempts, out-scoring the Cards 30-12 from the land of plenty.

Jerome Garrison and Blake Davis proved to be a thorn in the side for the Cards in the first half as the duo combined for 22 points in the opening stanza, helping GCU take a 37-26 lead into the break.

However, the Red and White came out of the break strong as Mitchell opened the frame with a three-point play and Nimrod Hilliard followed up with a triple to cut the deficit to five at 37-32 just 75 seconds into the second half. The two sides would continue to swap buckets over the ensuing few minutes, but a great feed from Hilliard found Wilson for layup to cut the deficit to four at 43-39 with 15:58 left in the game.

Hilliard followed up a layup by GCU's Killian Larson with a difficult one of his own, but GCU's Justin Foreman answered by grabbing an offensive board and hoisting a three. Akachi Okugo netted a layup just a moment later to extend the lead back out to nine with 13:37 left.

The Antelopes would continue to edge ahead, taking a 12-point lead on a Davis three with 7:39 left, and Okugo responded to a Wilson 18-footer with another triple to effectively put the game out of reach.

The Cards will return to action on Wednesday against Texas-Pan American. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
