Attorney warns BISD against "No Signs" policy

Attorney David Vann de Cordova, who has represented opponents of the Beaumont Independent School District majority board, is warning the district about overreach in its "No Sign" policy.

That's the BISD ban on public demonstration at board meetings that might disrupt business.

The letter was sent Tuesday after a man was removed from a meeting for holding a sign reading, "Don't tread on my first amendment rights."

De Cordova called it an effort to "crush dissent" and warned against arresting people for what he called "peaceful, non-verbal" expression.

Other districts may also have bans permitted by the Texas Association of School Boards, but if so, they are rarely enforced.

De Cordova said aggressive enforcement would clearly violate the Texas Open Meetings Act.  He said the district has not yet responded to the letter.
