Brother and sister dead following police chase in Jasper

A Brother and sister are dead and two others have been injured following a Department of Public Safety chase that ended in a collision Saturday morning. The accident happened at the intersection of Highway 96 (N. Wheeler Street) at Milam Street in Jasper.

Shortly before 1 a.m. a DPS trooper tried to stop the driver of a Ford Mustang, but he refused to pull over and the chase began. A Jasper City Police officer joined the chase.

The driver of the Mustang ran through a red light at Milam Street and T-boned a pickup. The Mustang rolled and caught fire after the collision.

A police spokesperson said the driver and a passenger in the Mustang were pronounced dead at the scene. One person was taken to the hospital.

The deceased are identified by officials as James Taylor, 19, and Shelby Taylor, 17, of Houston.

The driver of the pickup truck, Leif Howard, 31, is a Jasper businessman.  Howard and a passenger, Tracy Tucker of Houston, were treated and released from Jasper Memorial Hospital.

Jasper Police Chief Robert McDonald told 12News he believes the brother and sister attended a grandmother's funeral in Louisiana and have family in Jasper. He says the mother of the two victims was at the accident scene.

An investigator said it is unknown why the driver fled from authorities.
