Arrest made in death of Jasper baby

Police officers have made an arrest in the death of a three-month-old boy.

Justin Dewayne Havard, 23, was arrested in Newton Friday and charged with one count of injury to a child.

The Jasper Police Department received a 911 call from Havard on November 8. He told officers that he was watching his girlfriend's 4-year-old daughter and her 3-month-old son at the Myrtis Village apartment complex.

"He said that the baby was choking, and that he was in the process of giving the baby CPR," Jasper Police Chief Robert MacDonald told 12News shortly after the incident.

MacDonald said the baby was rushed to a local hospital, where staff members realized something was wrong. The baby was then airlifted to Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, where he died last Saturday afternoon.

Autopsy results show that the baby died from severe blunt force trauma to the head.

The baby's 4-year-old sister has since been removed from the home by the Department of Family and Protective Services and is currently staying with a relative.

Havard has been arraigned and denied bond. As of 3:30 p.m. Friday he remains in the Newton County Jail awaiting transfer back to Jasper.
