Lady Cards get road win against Roadrunners

Gia Ayers scores career-high 24 points for Lamar

SAN ANTONIO – Gia Ayers scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Lamar Lady Cardinals to a 63-59 win over UTSA in a non-conference women's basketball game Thursday night.

Ayers had 18 points in the second half as Lamar (2-1) rallied from being eight points down early in the second period.

Dominique Edwards had her second straight double-double, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Shauna Long added 10 points.

The Lady Cardinals trailed 42-34 with 17:17 remaining in regulation after Kamra King drained a 3-pointer for the Roadrunners (0-2).  Lamar chipped away at the lead and went ahead for good when Ayers connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to give Lamar a 53-49 edge with 5:16 remaining.

"It's a great win when you play on the road against a Conference USA team," Lamar coach Robin Harmony said. "It's a good win for Lamar and for the Southland Conference."

King had a career-high 27 points for the Roadrunners. Miki Turner had 13 points and Niaga Mitchell-Cole added 10 points.

"We battled through some adversity," Harmony said. "We didn't play well early, but we hung around and got some big-time stops and rebounds at the end when we needed them."

Lamar returns to action at 2 p.m. Sunday when it hosts Tulsa at the Montagne Center. For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715, or visit www.LamarCardinals.com.
