VIDOR -

The Texas Department of Public Safety has confirmed the identity of a 14-year-old girl who was hit and killed by a car on the Purple Heart Memorial Bridge in Orange County Monday night.

A spokesperson for the DPS said Sierra Phillips, of Vidor, was trying to cross traffic eastbound on Interstate 10 when she was struck by a vehicle.  The driver was unable to avoid hitting her.

The crash initially closed all eastbound lanes of I-10.

Troopers say the driver is a Houston woman.  She was taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth for observation.

Her husband was the only passenger in the car with her.  He was not injured.

A witness tells 12News "She was sprinting as fast as she possibly could. She was trying her best to make it across and regardless of her being on that bridge at night, she was definitely trying to not get hit."

Phillips was a freshman at Vidor High School. A family member tells 12News that Phillips rode the bus home from school every day but for some reason did not get on the bus Monday afternoon.

The relative says Phillips was later seen walking down Old Spanish Trail. She was then killed hours later on I-10.

The family does not know why Phillips did not get on the bus and how she ended up on Old Spanish Trail and the Interstate. They say missing the bus is out of her character. When she did not return home from school, they filed a missing persons report.
