Cards miss SLC tourney for first time since 2009

CONWAY, Ark. – The Lamar University women's soccer team saw its heroic run to a Southland Conference Tournament berth come up just short Friday night as the Cardinals dropped a 1-0 decision to host Central Arkansas.

Lamar, which was unbeaten in its last four games (3-0-1) heading into Friday's contest, needed a win against the Bears to have any hope of heading to the postseason. Instead, the Cardinals will not be at the Southland tourney for the first time since 2009, ending their season with a 7-10-2 overall record, including a 4-6-2 mark in Southland play.

The Bears (8-9-2, 5-6-0) remained alive for a spot in the tournament heading into its season finale on Sunday against McNeese State.

Lamar goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot had a stellar game for Lamar, making nine saves, but had no chance on the only goal of the game, an own goal that deflected off the head of a Lamar defender and into the back of the net.

"That's just the way our season has gone," Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. "The breaks that all went our way last year, just didn't go our way this year."

The Cardinals had just two shots on goal against Central Arkansas, as Lamar was shut out for the seventh time this season. Lindsay Goff and Kaitlyn Keith shared the shutout.

"It's disappointing not to make the tournament," Cervantes said. "We're going to work hard in the offseason and work on our finishing during the spring. I'm already looking forward to it."
