Officer involved in two accidents in five months

Posted: Updated:

A wreck between two Port Arthur police units left two police Chevy Tahoes severely damaged.  An internal investigation has begun into the officer who caused the crash.

The collision happened around midnight Wednesday as the officers went to investigate a report of shots being fired.  They did not find anything, but as they were leaving the area, one of the officers saw a group of fishermen, and slowed down.

Sergeant Ken Carona, who's the commander of PAPD's internal affairs, said, "He had slowed his vehicle to investigate further to maybe see if they knew about the shots being fired or anything like that, and the other officer coming behind them failed to slow down in time and struck the other officer in the rear."

The crash happened near the bridge on T B Ellison Parkway.

The officers are identified as Officer Douglas Klinkhammer and Officer Shawn Henry.  Both suffered minor injuries, and were treated and released from the hospital.  They have been placed on OJI (On the Job Injury) duty.

Both officers are 19-year veterans of the force.

A source has told us a blood sample was taken from Officer Klinkhammer.

Officer Klinkhammer, the policeman believed to be at fault in the accident, was involved in an accident earlier this year.  The first accident happened May 9 when his patrol unit struck a curve causing a blowout in one of the tires.

Sergeant Carona said that all accident involving fleet vehicles are internally investigated to check if there are any policy violations.

He also says judging by the damage to the vehicles; speed could have been a factor.
