It's been a while since Georgia Smith has been able to get her nails done. She was a photographer in the Air Force during the Vietnam era. And at 64 years old, she gets outpatient care for her at the VA in Waco. Georgia says it's been 30 years since she's had a manicure. So today she got silver nails. "Some times people forget about the feminine side of being a veteran." She says while she's getting her nails done. One group that hasn't forgotten about our female vets, is the Bella Beauty College off Franklin in Waco. Every 3 months, cosmetology students treat veterans to a free shampoo, haircut, and manicure. "We get to help them, we get to pamper them, and it makes them feel good about themselves." Says Director of Bella Beauty College Debra Johnson. And when 67 year old Army veteran Juanita Woody sees her new haircut, she's ready to show it off. "To all the single guys out there, look at me!" Says Juanita as she plays with her curly hair The VA knows that recognizing our female veterans is more than just a trip to the beauty shop. Vivian Minns of Central Texas Veterans Health Care says, "this builds self esteem and confidence. It's a chance to get out. And it's more a support system if they don't have any family here." Since females are the fastest growing veteran population, with over 13 thousand of them here in Central Texas the few that got pampered today, left feeling special. So when Georgia saw herself after getting her hair and nails done, she was feeling pretty confident as she says. "you were fun to flirt with! haha!"
too bad I'm nowhere near her league.
