Paddleboarder's video captures close encounter with shark

A California boarder went looking for sharks -- and got quite the scare when he found one!

Mike Durand says he heard two large sharks were spotted off the coast of Banhattan Beach, so he went to check it out with a video camera.

Durand saw the shark you see here (in video above,) but wasn't expecting the animal to take a personal interest in him.

The video shows the shark swimming right underneath durand's board, even bumping it.

So why did Durand venture out into possibly shark-infested waters?

"it's exciting. I like to live on the edge. I like to surf good-sized waves and do things that scare me a little bit. It makes me feel alive, so when i saw the shark, i was like, aww, there it is. That's the footage i've wanted to get. I will pursue this shark a little bit. I didn't know he would pursue me.," said Durand.

The sharks are believed to be juvenile great whites, measuring between four and seven feet long.

A team of scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium have been dispatched to the area in an attempt to tag the sharks.
