Local celebrities build home for World Habitat Day

Posted: Updated:

21 local celebrities and business owners gathered Tuesday to help build a Habitat for Humanity home.

The volunteers who rolled up their sleeves and manned power tools varied from local doctors to business owners to media professionals like 12News anchor Mary Sturgill.

It was all to celebrate "World Habitat Day" and remember the 1.6 billion people worldwide who don't have decent shelter.

The volunteers worked on a home in Beaumont for Ashley Campbell, a single mother of two.

Each of the 21 "celebrity" volunteers were required to raise $250 to participate in the build and in all they raised more than $8,000.

Campbell is working on the home as well, and hopes to be able to move in by Christmas.
