Police say girl struck by pickup as she chased dog into street

Posted: Updated:

Beaumont police say it is fortunate that a pickup truck driver was not speeding when an 11-year-old girl ran in front of him just before 7 p.m. Friday.

A police spokesperson said the girl chased a dog onto the roadway and ran into the path of a pickup truck in the 4000 block of Cleveland Street.

Officers on the scene said it appears to be an accident and there did not appear to be any wrongdoing on behalf of the driver of the pickup.

Witnesses say the impact knocked the girl into a ditch.  She was taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth for x-rays. An officer said she suffered no broken bones and is expected to be fine.

The girl's father was arrested.  Police say he made threats against officers and others at the scene.   They say he was combative, apparently distressed with what had happened to his daughter.

The girl's family has been going through a rough time.  Her grandmother told us that on Saturday the family will be burying one of her nephews.
