SOUTHEAST TEXAS -
No compromise was reached Monday between U.S. Congress members bringing the first government shutdown since 1996.
12News researched how it could effect Southeast Texas.
The National Park Service gates will stay shut at the Big Thicket National Preserve until a compromise can be made. A number of employees with the U.S. Attorney's Office Eastern District of Texas will be off work starting Tuesday.
However, U.S. Attorneys are exempt from furlough in the interest of public safety. Employees of the Jack Brooks Federal Courthouse reported to work Tuesday morning and will continue for at least two weeks if the shutdown lasts that long thanks to extra funds in a judiciary account.
After two weeks only employees essential to operations will work. We are told essential operations refer to criminal proceedings in the courthouse.
A spokesperson for The Jefferson County US Department of Veteran Affairs told 12News its office will be open Tuesday as well as its outpatient clinic.
