Posted: Updated:

The state's oldest and longest serving certified peace officer was laid to rest Friday in Port Arthur.

Loved ones were joined by law enforcement agencies, military personnel and the Golden Triangle Patriot Guard Riders in bidding a final farewell to Martin J. Holmes, who was better known in the community, as Popeye.

After serving in the Korean War, Holmes' law enforcement career spanned more than 57 years.

Popeye died last Thursday at the age of 81 after being hospitalized for an illness.

His funeral was held at St. James Catholic Church in Port Arthur.   Then his hearse led a procession of cars to Greenlawn Memorial Park, passing by landmarks important in Holmes life, like the Port Arthur Police Department and the Jefferson County sub-courthouse.

Survivors include Pat, his wife of 37 years and six children, including 12  News HD reporter Vanessa Holmes.
