Volleyball set for first conference homestand
Lady Cards will host Houston Baptist and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
BEAUMONT – After picking up its first Southland victory of the season last weekend, the Lamar volleyball team will look for a couple more this week as the Lady Cardinals will take on Houston Baptist and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first home conference meetings of the season. @
While the play freshmen has been by and large the story of the 2013 season for the Lady Cards, the bulk of the offense has come from the hands of veterans Madi Martin, Cortney Moore and Sierra Whittaker. Moore, who leads the team in kills with 103, averages 2.34 per set. After missing the first chunk of the season due to injury, Whittaker is averaging 3.38 per set this season and stands 77 shy of reaching the 1,000 career kill plateau, and Martin is averaging 1.76 after switching over from setter last season to right side hitter. @
Freshmen Chelsea Grant, Nicole Parish, Cedar Young, Sara Landis and Beniece Douch have all been productive when they've seen time on the court, averaging a kill or more apiece, and Alexa Johnson has been the facilitator, putting up eight assists per frame. @
Grant has also been stout at the net defensively, and ranks 12 th among freshmen nationally with 1.11 blocks per set. @
Megan Schwartz holds down the floor defense with 3.91 digs per set, and Erika Rojas is second on the team with 2.51. Lauren Stahlman chips in 1.43. @
On Thursday, the Lady Cards will take on HBU for the first time as conference foes. The Huskies are 5-8 this season, and this marks the third straight season the two sides have met. Last season, LU fell 3-1 to the Huskies on the first day of the season. @
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (7-6) will make the trek to Beaumont on Saturday. The Islanders have won four in a row and will play at Sam Houston State on Thursday. Moore was the star for the Lady Cards in a pair of losses to TAMUCC last season, racking up 20 kills and eight blocks. @
First serve on Thursday is set for 7 p.m. at McDonald Gym. Saturday's start is set for 1 p.m.
