Copper thieves steal from Martin Elementary for second time in two weeks

Police say around 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, two men broke into a restricted area and stole copper wiring from an air conditioning unit at Martin Elementary School on Pine Street.

"They cut it off, as close as they can to get as much copper as they can," said BISD Sergeant Danny Moore.

It's the 8th time copper's been lifted from a BISD campus since the start of summer, and the second time in two weeks thieves have hit Martin Elementary.

"They know what they're after and they know what they're doing. They seem to be attacking the same chiller. Point of entry seems to be the same into the maintenance area also," Sergeant Moore said.

Police say the thieves used bolt cutters to get inside the gate. They also damaged a nearby power box.

The damage left the school without air conditioning for most of Tuesday morning.

"Parents, these are your children, it's affecting your children directly, so we just need your help," Sergeant Moore said.

Police hope the public and images taken from a security camera can help put a stop to the madness.
