Orange inmate dies in custody

The Orange County Sheriff's Office says it appears an inmate who died in custody died as a result of a brain aneurysm. 

First responders were called to the Orange County Jail at about 3 a.m. September 18 to assist with an inmate who had a medical emergency. 

Joda Lewis Atchley, 55, of Orange was taken to Baptist Hospital in Orange where he was found to be suffering from bleeding on the brain. He was then taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth and then Methodist Hospital in Houston where he was pronounced dead at about 5 a.m. September 19.

Doctors believe Atchley suffered from a ruptured aneurysm.

The Texas Rangers were contacted and are conducting the investigation.

Atchley was in jail on a judge's order September 11.
