Sheriff: north Texas mother shot three sons, husband, self

Investigators believe a North Texas mother pulled the trigger killing her three sons, husband and herself at the family's home near Rice, the Navarro County sheriff said Tuesday.

The apparent murder-suicide incident left Israel Alvarez, his wife Guadalupe Ronquillo-Ovalle and their sons, ages 4, 8 and 10, all dead.

Sheriff Elmer Tanner said investigators believe the shootings occurred late on Sept. 19 or early Sept. 20. A relative discovered their bodies Sept. 22 and notified police.

All of the family suffered gunshot wounds, according to Tanner, but only the mother's appeared to be self-inflicted. The male victims were shot in the upper torso. The case is still being reviewed by the medical examiner to determine official causes of death.

Tanner said investigators found evidence at the scene that supports the theory that the woman was behind all the shootings. There was "no clear cut evidence" that the victims were trying to flee the scene, Tanner said.

Authorities found weapons inside the home and specifically mentioned a 22-caliber long rifle that was found.

Tanner said there is no clear motive for the shootings, but did note that there may have been other incidents of violence in the home.

Records show the husband, Israel Alvarez, was arrested Sept. 11 on a misdemeanor family violence charge for allegedly shoving his wife. He pleaded no contest, paid a fine and was freed.

Investigators are continuing to conduct interviews with others who may have more information into what might have lead to the shooting.
