September 24th marks the eight-year anniversary of Hurricane Rita making landfall near Johnson Bayou, Louisiana as a Category 3 storm with winds at 115 mph.

Rita, at one time, was the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Gulf of Mexico with winds of 180 mph.  The largest evacuation in U.S. history resulted.  Though the storm weakened as it approached Texas and Louisiana, Rita still caused wide-spread damage across the region totaling $12 Billion.  There were one hundred twenty deaths directly related to the storm.

Rita was also responsible for causing the worst outage in Entergy's history.

Rita's name has been retired, never to be used again.
