Official: Chemical leak at mid county plant poses no threat

County officials say a chemical leak at the DuPont plant on Twin City Highway has been contained and poses no threat to public health.

DuPont officials say an equipment failure lead to the release of sulfuric acid, benzene compounds and traces of benzene.  They say all the materials were contained at the site, that no workers were exposed and the all-clear has been given at the plant.

According to a press release issued by the company, they have "notified local authorities and the TCEQ as a courtesy. An investigation will be underway to determine the cause of the incident."

They say a shelter-in-place was issued at the plant as a precaution

Jefferson County Emergency Management Coordinator Greg Fountain says the plant leaked a compound called aniline, a benzene derivative. Online resources show the compound is used in the manufacture of rubber, dyes, resins, pharmaceuticals, and varnishes. Benzene is a known carcinogen.
