New sex offender rules in Nederland suspended

One week after going into effect, Nederland's amendment dealing with registered sex offenders is being suspended.

The council recently made the law tougher, keeping registered sex offenders away from all places where children gather, like churches and dance studios.

But as 12News first reported, state advocacy group Texas Voices was threatening legal action against Nederland, calling the amended ordinance unconstitutional.

The city manager says after speaking to the city attorney, they decided they need to examine court cases in other parts of the country before coming up with new rules regulating sex offenders.

The city will return to the previous law that was enacted back in 2006.
